Study shows creative group activities can ease depression & anxiety

Creative social engagement can be an effective alternative to traditional treatments, according to a new study published in Nature Mental Health.

Depression and anxiety affect millions of older adults worldwide, yet many struggle to access or tolerate conventional treatments like medication or talk therapy.

This study, led by PhD candidate Elizabeth Quinn, analysed data from 39 studies across 21 countries, involving more than 3,360 participants for depression and 949 for anxiety. The results were significant: group arts interventions produced mental health benefits comparable to antidepressants, therapy and physical activity.

One of the most notable findings was the greater impact of these interventions on older adults living in care homes. These residents, who are often at higher risk of isolation and mental health challenges, experienced the most significant improvements in wellbeing. However, benefits were consistent across all types of artistic activities and settings, reinforcing the power of shared creative experiences.
